Gynecology for the Unique Needs of Adolescents and Teens

Adolescent & Teen Education

Education regarding safe sex, birth control options and empowering confidence are key for teenage girls. Dr. Hoppe provides a relaxed, non-judgmental setting for girls to share their most intimate concerns and fears. Accurate, up-to-date information is critical. Due to technological advancements, many girls may be getting their information from sources that may not be reliable or trustworthy. As part of educating teens & adolescents, we provide age appropriate information and guidance on a variety of topics that most affect girls as they enter and live through their teen years, such as:

  • Nutrition and diet
  • Personal health and hygiene
  • Stress (peer pressure, social influence issues, technology)
  • Reproductive health
  • Biological issues
  • Menstruation
  • Teen pregnancy
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s)
  • Smoking, drugs and alcohol abuse

Menstruation, PMS, & Hormonal Balance in Teens & Adolescents

With a small exception, during and even prior to a girl’s teenage years, menstruation will begin. A girl’s first period can be a time of celebration (rite of passage) or a scary bleeding scenario where she might think she’s dying. Luckily, most young girls know about their “period” but many do not get the proper education from their parents or school. Some girls may be suffering from severe premenstrual symptoms (PMS) such as mood swings, irritability and food cravings. Dr. Hoppe can help deal with these symptoms and make life happier during this period of time.

From the time menstruation begins, many bodily changes take place. Hormones may be wreaking havoc and many girls need a place to get the guidance, support and education they need. We provide counseling and education to discuss these biological changes like breast growth, skin changes, reproductive maturation, and even social pressures, that occur during this life stage. Annual exams can be done at any age after the onset of the first cycle/menarche and the initial PAP smear is performed at age 21, unless indicated prior to this.
