What is Menopause?
Menopause is a natural transition defined by no menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. For some women, it is a breeze and no menopausal symptoms arise. For many women, it can be a nightmare, and one they suffer through silently. The average age of menopause is 51 years of age in the United States. Many symptoms can occur prior to this time while still menstruating. This stage is called “perimenopause.”
Common symptoms of menopause and perimenopause are:
- Hot flashes
- Night sweats
- Mood swings
- Irritability
- Vaginal dryness
- Pain with sex
- Brain fog & poor concentration
- Weight gain – especially in the abdominal section
Many more symptoms exist. For the majority of women, these symptoms can last about 2-5 years, but 10-15 % of women can have these symptoms for their lifetime! That is why it is imperative that you visit a physician/practitioner who is well-versed on natural lifestyle changes (diet/exercise, etc.) as well as hormone therapy. Before the 1900’s, the average lifespan for a woman was approximately 50 years of age- the same time when menopause hits. Now in the United States, the average lifespan for a woman is 84 year of age! That means there are 30+ years that may be spent in menopause/post-menopause. Wouldn’t you like to know the best ways to be living these years with the highest quality of life too?
Alternative Menopause Therapies
Even though Dr. Hoppe believe in a holistic healthcare approach, she also recommends advanced medical therapies when needed, such as hormone therapy. It is important to understand the true risks and benefit of hormone therapy, also known as hormone replacement therapy, including bioidentical hormones. Consultations are available – both in person at Dr. Hoppe’s office or via Skype. Learn more about hormone therapy.
